We have a thing for sedans here on TestDrive. Last week we featured what Volkswagen called an 'all-new' North American Passat and we absolutely hated it. For the same model year Hyundai released their all-new mid-size sedan which truly was a new take on their family hauler. We're in the carryover 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Ultimate and seeing how a straight up hybrid electric vehicle fares in the growing world of plug-ins.

Our full tour and review of this 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Ultimate goes over what's changed from the short 2020 model year, for Canada and the United States there are no changes as this model year carries over from the previous, however the MSRP has risen by $100 in Canada. Paint is a $200 option if you chose anything other than white, including black, red, blue, and silver. We go over what features and design traits are included on this new Sonata, including some of the small features missing from competing vehicles, and how this Hybrid compares feature and price-wise to the ICE or gas-only Sonata.

Some of the features include LED headlights with LED daytime running lights that fade into the chrome trim, a solar roof for renewable self-charging of the battery, all the enhanced safety technology we'd expect like adaptive cruise control, highway driving assist, high beam assist, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, blind spot display via the 12.3" cluster computer, rear cross traffic alert, a high definition 360º camera with front and rear parking sensors, remote starter, keyless entry, and a proximity opening trunk.

We jump inside the 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Ultimate to talk about the all-new interior design and layout, including all the features found on this top-end trim. Our black leather Sonata has front heated and ventilated seats, 2 driver memory settings, rear outboard heated seats with two heat intensities along with control from the infotainment system, a 10.25" infotainment system with a 12-speaker Bose audio system, SiriusXM radio, HD Radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Other features include a colour head-up display, dual zone automatic climate control with driver-only mode, a 64-colour ambient lighting system, HomeLink, Hyundai BlueLink phone connectivity, leatherette door and dash trim, wireless phone charing, and LED interior lights. We go over the interior dimensions and specs and compare them to other popular midsize sedans sold in Canada.

We then take the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid on a comprehensive real-world road test to talk about the overall fuel economy and how it compares to other vehicles we've tested, along with the specifications of the solar roof. We talk about how the ride, drive, and handling compares to other sedans, and our overall impressions of how this vehicle behaves as a family hauling hybrid sedan. Features like active noise cancellation help to augment the feel of this vehicle and position it well against other cars on the market.

We wrap up our full tour and review of this 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid by going over the reasons one might consider this car, the strengths and weaknesses of it, and everything else potential buyers would want to know before committing to a vehicle like this.
