Subaru re-designs its Crosstrek compact crossover for 2018, which returns with a familiar look, a re-tuned powertrain, and more refinement throughout. The new Crosstrek shares its engine and platform with the Impreza, but adds ground clearance and wheel-arch cladding to give it more off-road capabilities and a rugged look. With only 152 horsepower, the Crosstrek is no sports car, and highway passing will require planning, but the new version is substantially quieter than last year’s model.

In terms of cargo space, the 2018 Crosstrek matches last year’s numbers, which were not record setters, but it does have more head- and legroom in the backseat than some competitors. Subaru’s EyeSight system remains one of the better packages of advanced safety gear available to U.S. buyers, and this year Crosstrek buyers will get forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control standard, with options for rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking.
