The Indiana Army Ammunition Plant was a massive site, consisting of 18,169.41 acres to be exact. When everything was completed, there were as many as 1700 buildings, 190 miles of roads and 92 miles of railroad tracks on the property. Charlestown State Park was created from land that was once owned by the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant. Inside the park today is some remnants of the old Rose Island Theme Park, which was popular in the 1920s. The Ohio River flood of 1937 wiped out the theme park for good. Other than that Charlestown appears to be your typical rural southern Indiana town.
