Mario has one of the most iconic voices of any character in videogame history. The voice has become one of the most memorable things about this beloved character. Can you believe that this voice all started with a monologue about pizza? Charles Martinet is the voice actor who’s been providing Mario’s voice ever since the character first spoke in a game. Hearing the story about how he scored the role certainly makes it sound like Martinet’s now-iconic interpretation of the character was a surprise to both him and the auditioners who worked with Nintendo, alike. From his first time performing as Mario back in 1992 to his most recent Mario role in 2022, Martinet has said “it’s a-me, Mario!” in a way that no one else quite can. Martinet has provided the voice for many other video game characters, including even more characters that we know and love from the Super Mario Bros franchise, including Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, and even Donkey Kong. Joining Chris Pratt to lend their talent to the film, Anya Taylor Joy, Charlie, Day, Keegan Michael-Key, Jack Black and Seth Rogen. Even so, no voice is quite as recognizable and irreplaceable as Mario’s. It’s always interesting to learn about how an iconic voice came to be, but now is an especially important time to consider all that went into making Mario’s voice what it is today. This is, of course, because there’s already been some backlash over the highly anticipated Super Mario Bros movie. Actor, Chris Pratt is putting on Mario’s red hat and taking on the role for the film. Will he be able to master Mario’s voice? We’re ready to find out. Lets-a-go!
