Welcome to Miss Sophie’s storytime. Today we’re going to read Queen of Hearts by Mary Engelbreit.

Valentine’s Day was one of Ann Estelle’s favorite holidays. She liked boxes of chocolate, of course, and candy hearts, and cookies with red sprinkles. And she loved getting valentines from all her friends and family. But the thing Ann Estelle liked most of all about Valentine’s Day was making things.

This is Ann Estelle sitting on an ottoman with valentine’s day chocolate, cupcakes and heart shaped cookies. Her dog is grey and has a red heart on it’s collar. It looks like he wants some too. But dogs shouldn’t eat chocolate.

Red and pink and white construction paper. Scissors and glue. Ribbons and lace and lots of glitter.

Ann Estelle is busy making something. Isn’t it fun to make the things that you imagine in your head. You just have to remember to clean up when you’re done. I wonder what she’s making.

Yes, Valentine’s Day was definitely one of the best holidays of all.

Ann Estelle is pointing to the calendar. It says February at the top and there’s a red heart on day number 14. Valentine’s Day is always on February 14th.

At school Ann Estelle’s class was decorating boxes to hold their valentines. Ann Estelle brought a plain brown shoe box from home. But it wasn’t plain for long.

First Ann Estelle cut a slot in the top of The Box for valentines to go in. Then she covered The Box with pink paper. On the front, in her fanciest handwriting, she wrote “the Queen of Hearts.”

It sure looks fine to make a valentine’s day box. And then decorate it any way you like. They have glue, crayons, a pencil and they’re wrapping the construction paper around the box. Oh look they have ribbon too. I think I want to make one now too. Do you use anything else to make your valentines?

A valentine box needed lace. And glitter, of course. It needed candy hearts too, and luckily Ann Estelle had some in her craft box.

She also has buttons in there, string, feathers and some ribbon. A craft box is a good idea. Then you can put everything you need in one place.

But it still looked sort of ordinary. And ordinary was definitely not good enough for Ann Estelle’s valentine box.

The candy hearts on the box say love you, be mine and kiss me. She also cut out and decorated the red heart. And hear you can also see the ribbon and how nice she wrote queen of hearts on it. Ann Estelle is really putting in a lot of work to make a special valentine box.

At home Ann Estelle and her friend Gracie had fun playing dress-up. This gave Ann Estelle an idea. Pink feathers would give The Box a look of distinction. Sparkling jewels would add a bit of color. Silk roses and daisies would be a nice touch, too.

Ann Estelle has a trunk full of dress-up items. Her friend Gracie is wearing a pink dress with ruffles and a red pearl necklace, Ann Estelle has on a blue dress with red flowers and a purple sash around her waist. In the trunk there’s also a purse, and a shawl made out of green feathers. Look her dog is even wearing a green hat with pink roses on it. That looks like a lot of fun.

Ann Estelle squirted the flowers with her mother’s perfume. “Wait until I get all this on The Box,” said Ann Estelle.

Oh I can’t wait to see how The Box will look with the flowers on it.

Ann Estelle visited her neighbor Tommy. Playing with his cars gave her another idea. She also remembered a long red-and-white ribbon she had seen in her mother’s sewing box.

You never know when you’re going to get a good idea. I bet Ann Estelle and her mom make things together too.

The next day at school, Mrs. McGilligan said, “My goodness, a Valentine’s Day box that rolls.” It certainly isn’t ordinary now, thought Ann Estelle. It’s the best box in the entire world.

Wow that looks amazing, what did Ann Estelle add to the box since we last saw it? Starting from the bottom she added the blue and purple cars, the blue squiggly ribbon at the bottom, a picture she drew of a house in the middle of a heart, a pink and orange feather tied together with a blue and white bow. A white daisy, the red and white ribbon from her mom’s sewing box and a red ribbon with pom poms on it. On the top she added another pink feather and an orange tulip flower with some white lace, a small flower pot with flowers in it and a red rose.

The next day was Valentine’s Day. Ann Estelle’s friends stopped by her desk all morning to admire The Box. “I like the flowers best,” said Gracie. “How ‘bout those feathers!” said Audrey Ann.

Look on this side of the box she has a green and a yellow car and an orange and green feathers with jewels on them. That sure is a fancy box. Do you like it? What’s your favorite part?
