Lost Civilizations of the Mayas
The so-called pre-Columbian civilizations developed in Central and South America before Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492. The best-known among them are the Inca, Aztec, and Maya civilizations. The Maya civilization was located in southern Mexico. It was organized into city-states, and its economy was based on agriculture. Maya society was divided into castes, and the cities were led by a hereditary monarchy. They worshipped many gods linked to nature, such as the sun, rain, moon, corn, and many others
Contrary to the Incas and Aztecs, who were wiped out in the 16th century by Spanish soldiers who had come to conquer the lands of the New World, Maya civilization had already ceased to exist by the time of the arrival of the conquistadors. From the eighth to the 10th centuries, the great cities of Tikal and Copan were progressively abandoned for reasons we don't know. This decline was probably due to factors like war, drought, and revolt
The World of the Maya covers southeastern Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula, Chiapas, and almost all of present-day Guatemala, at the peak of its civilization. It also covered a bit of Central America, including a small part of Honduras, where the famous site of Copan is located, and part of present-day Salvador. To summarise, Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize were formerly part of British Honduras and the Yucatan Peninsula.
The three main aspects of the Maya civilization dating back to 1000 BC have been identified. Recent research has revealed a lot of information about the Maya civilization's beginnings. We now know that between 900 B.C. and 500 B.C., the Maya already lived in the lowlands, building great cities. But these are very recent discoveries.
For over 300 years. Maya civilization flourished, then began to decline, and finally disappeared at the end of the first millennia of the modern era. Beyond their agricultural work, the Maya weaved cotton and worked soft metals like gold, copper, and silver to create jewellery and adornments. Then, the feudal Empire declined and deteriorated. First in the south, then in the north, well before the arrival of the Spaniards.
