The Philippines government has estimated they will need 6.7 million more homes by 2022, to make up for damage from natural disasters like typhoons, floods and monsoons. At the same time, the country also faces challenges in how to best manage, and reclaim the value from, their plastic waste.

Our project partner The Plastic Flamingo—a Manila-based social enterprise—designed an innovative solution to address both issues: Eco-lumber, a sustainable construction material made from recycled waste.

Through a network of collection points around the city, plastic waste is collected from various partners like shops, corporate offices, and schools. They are then brought back to their warehouse, where it is transformed into a variety of urban infrastructural products.

As a building material, their ‘eco-planks’ made from recycled plastic has a long lifespan and is almost maintenance-free, with some unique properties that make it more desirable over traditional wood. They are now putting that to the test with the construction of their first eco-shelter prototype, a low-cost housing option for communities in need.
