Watch a Smoky pit turn Smokeless! It took a while to get some firewood split, but here we are! Not the driest wood but it'll do. Here I show you my method for starting a fire using 16” hardwood logs and 2 fire starters. There are two stages, a warming stage and the actual smokeless burning stage. The cabin stack of logs works to get the pile heated up well without needing to use fine kindling to start. It is always a bit smokey in the beginning before the pit warms up. After it warms up and start burning hotter, I rearrange the logs into a teepee shape to give it a good bit of airflow to burn. If you rearrange too soon, you end up cooling the fire instead and make a smokey mess.

Normally I would not have let the warming stage go so long but got distracted watching the kid. Could have adjusted to teepee mode around 15 minutes. I normally don't burn fires during the daytime but it does show the smoke quite well.

We drop our own trees as needed to keep the woods safe. There’s a mixture of white ash, oak, and some maple. The wood I burned here has been seasoned for about 9 months. Normally we split and season for a year or more. That stuff burns incredibly well.
