Undescended testes, medically termed cryptorchidism, is a congenital condition where one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum during fetal development. This condition affects approximately 3-5% of full-term male infants and is even more common in premature babies, with up to 30% having undescended testes.

The descent of the testicles from the abdomen into the scrotum typically occurs during the last few months of pregnancy. However, in cases of undescended testes, this process is interrupted, resulting in one or both testicles being located outside the scrotum at birth.

There are several factors that can contribute to undescended testes, including hormonal imbalances, genetic factors, and abnormalities in the development of the testicular blood vessels. Additionally, certain maternal factors, such as smoking during pregnancy, may increase the risk of cryptorchidism in infants.

While undescended testes may not cause immediate discomfort or symptoms in newborns, if left untreated, this condition can lead to complications later in life. The main concerns associated with undescended testes include infertility, increased risk of testicular cancer, and inguinal hernias.

Treatment for undescended testes typically involves surgical intervention to reposition the testicle(s) into the scrotum to maximise the chances of successful descent and minimise the risk of long-term complications.

In cases where the testicle(s) cannot be brought down into the scrotum with surgery, alternative treatment options, such as hormonal therapy or laparoscopic surgery, may be considered. However, these approaches are less common and are usually reserved for specific situations.

Early detection and prompt treatment of undescended testes are crucial for preventing potential complications and ensuring optimal outcomes for affected individuals. Regular physical examinations by a healthcare provider can help identify cryptorchidism early on, allowing for timely intervention and management.

Make sure you obtain professional advice before proceeding on any treatment since each case is different.
