Dan Novak and Ashley Thompson host today's Learning English show.

First: A United Nations report says that even with hunger being a problem, the world wastes about 19 percent of the food it produces. As Bryan Lynn reports, an amount of food equal to 1 billion meals a day is wasted every year.

Next: Jill Robbins presents a winning entry from VOA Learning English and Go Global's joint contest, Teach Us about Ukraine. Oksana Kostyrko, a history teacher in Bobrovytsia School No. 1, wrote about the city of Lviv.

Then: Research published in March found that a free meal program in American schools was connected with a reduction in childhood obesity in the United States. Dan Friedell and Anna Matteo have the story on the LE Education Report. Then Dan joins Ashley in the studio. She asks him to explain the word eligible.

Finally: Time for LE's Lesson of the Day. John Russell bases his instruction on a report from Andrew Smith report about the growing amount of electronic waste, or e-waste. Learn all about the word "recycling."
