A "retcon" is "retroactive continuity." It's a term for when a sequel or other story expansion comes out later, but changes the meaning or events of previous installments. A good example of this would be Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

Not that the continuity between movies has ever been that strong, but besides the usual trashing of the sequel bait to just do a completely different story anyway or bringing well dead characters back to life, The Final Chapter messes with so much of the continuity it effectively rewrites the entire series in one fell swoop.

Seriously, the amount of things that now make absolutely no sense is astonishing, to say the least.
