France and Italy are constructing a €26BN railway across the Alps, uniting the cities of Lyon and Turin. The project, which will span 270 kilometers across the Alps, will replace the current railway across the mountains, which was completed in 1871. With a shallower gradient, wider curves and modern infrastructure, it will allow for high-speed travel, with passenger trains traveling at 220 kph. It will also include the world’s longest railway tunnel, the Mont d’Ambin Base Tunnel. The project will cost €26BN, €8.6 billion of which is for the Mont d’Ambin base, which will be covered 40% by the European Union. Once finished, it will slash travel times between France and Italy, boost economic growth and divert millions of tons of freight traffic away from trucks, positively impacting the environment. Construction is currently underway and the project is planned to open in 2032.
