In this week’s episode, Sid Evans, Editor-in-Chief of Southern Living Magazine, chats with legendary whole hog barbecue pitmaster Ed Mitchell and his son, Ryan, who’s helping to keep the family’s legend going. In addition to a new BBQ joint set to open in 2024, the duo have a new book out with co-author Zella Palmer called ‘Smoke & Fire’ that through recipes, essays, and personal stories delves into the deep history and traditions of North Carolina BBQ. Guided by their extremely large family, especially parents and grandparents, Ed and Ryan each came to BBQ in their own way. And while they knew the value it had in their own community, it took trips to New York City to show them just how big a deal they and their BBQ was.
