During the First World War, the trench environment that much of the conflict was fought in caused a number of medical conditions, but one of the most harrowing was Trench Foot. This was caused by a soldier standing in cold water for long periods of time and having damp feet, and in the most serious cases a soldier could have to have their foot amputated for it.
