Folic acid is the most essential vitamin that most of the doctors suggest a woman have before and after pregnancy. So, how is folic acid helpful during pregnancy?

Taking the prescribed amount of folic acid is useful for both the baby and the mother.

For a baby, folic acid enables healthy growth of neural tube into the brain and spinal cord. Sometimes, a baby’s neural tube may not close completely leading to many health issues like:

Spina bifida, which is incomplete growth of the spinal cord or the vertebrae. This will lead to permanent disability.

Another major health issue is Anencephaly. It is the incomplete development of major parts of the brain. Babies suffering from this condition do not live longer.

There are other conditions that a baby may suffer from during pregnancy.

These conditions can be premature birth, cleft lip and palate, poor growth in the womb and low birth weight.

For a monther, folic acid can help by preventing pregnancy complication, miscarriage, many types of cancers, stroke, heart diseases, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease.

For this reason, it is best to take folic acid before and after pregnancy to stay healthy and give birth to a healthy baby.
