This particular photograph is one of the most famous photographs taken during the battle of the bulge. It first appeared in the Stars & Stripes in January 1945, and became an inspiration for book covers and even a commemoration stamp. Today marks the 78 anniversary for the official end of the Battle of the Bulge. In the last year we've been researching one of the most famous photographs of this battle: the running paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne Division. The photograph has become immensely popular due to veteran Walter E. Hughes. He recognized himself as the running paratrooper and has been telling that story whenever he could. However, we learned that Hughes was not the only one to recognize himself. In typical SNAFU fashion, we tried to take a Then & Now photo and tell the story of the photograph that hung in James Gavin's office after the war.
