The Makgadikgadi basin is all that remains of a great, ancient lake, one of the largest in Africa. Subscribe to Our World: https://bit.ly/3xnPuGL

Over the millennia the lake disappeared until all that was left were vast salt pans and grassy plains. The salt pans are the largest in the world, 14,000 square miles of sodium chloride and sodium carbonate. Much of the basin is a national park that is home to the largest free-ranging herds of Wildebeest and Zebra in southern Africa. For half the year the only surface water available to these herds is to be found in the Boteti Channel at the western border of the park. For the last seven years water has failed to make it to the channel from the delta and the last pools in the dusty riverbed are drying out.
