David and David explain why 5G reduces battery life. Currently, the chips in our smartphones aren't designed to use 5G. So, there's an additional 5G chip — which uses a lot of power.
This problem is going to continue until phone manufacturers can create a system on a chip that supports 5G.
Fortunately, the iPhone 12 line has a Smart Data mode which intelligently switches between 4G and 5G when appropriate.
