Sen. Sydney Batch, a Wake County Democrat, said studies have shown that transgender children who receive care decrease their risk of suicide by more than 50%. The committee chair, Senator Buck Newton, can be heard on mic (at the :37 mark) laughing as she speaks.

Senator Lisa Grafstein called out Newton.

"I don't think it was appropriate."

Newton: "I'm sorry for laughing about specious studies that are easily argued against.
And so that's Senator Batch's opinion, and I have mine, and I can express mine too."
