In US news and current events today, Amy Barrett is Trump’s Supreme Court pick. At age 48, she could serve for 40 years or more. What should you know about Amy Barrett? Barrett, a former Scalia clerk, was appointed by Trump in 2017 to be a federal judge even though she had no prior judicial experience. She’s affiliated with a religious group called People of Praise, whose female members are assigned to personal advisers known as ‘handmaids.' Barrett says her Catholic faith won’t come into play if she’s on the bench, but her writings as a law professor suggest otherwise. Barrett could be the deciding vote in overturning Roe v. Wade. She was a member of Notre Dame’s Faculty for Life Group from 2010 to 2016 and fought contraception coverage in the Affordable Care Act. Barrett also took speaking fees from the Alliance Defending Freedom, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled an anti-LGBTQ+ hate group. With the GOP controlling the Senate, there is little Democrats can do to stop Barrett’s nomination.
