Over the past few years, EVs have been gaining more and more popularity as people advocate for cars with fewer emissions. And because of that, automakers have had to adapt to this and start making EVs. With the growth of the EV industry, there have also been more companies coming out to join this race. We saw the rise of companies like Tesla and Rivian, which ended up dominating this market. However, there is yet another company that has decided to join the EV race, and this is Xiaomi.
Xiaomi has been relentlessly working to join the EV market. This is something that they announced about three years ago, and it is now here. They have kept their word, and after a while of waiting, we can finally say that they have unveiled their first car. During the company’s event held in Shanghai, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun unveiled the SU7 EV sedan on stage. This brand new Xiaomi SU7 is entirely based on the company’s state-of-the-art electric car platform, which is codenamed Modena. This is a platform that has been engineered and designed to handle up to 400-volt and 800-volt electric architectures. With this platform, the company is aiming to offer versatility in powertrain options, and this will include single- and dual-motor drivetrains.
But let’s go step by step as we see what the car is all about. We will start off with the appearance, which is pretty good. The all-new SU7 has been designed with the aim of making it the most aerodynamically efficient. The car features smooth body lines with little to no sharp edges, making it look just simple enough. At the front, there are LED headlights and DRLs, which bring out the low-slung bonnet. When you take a look at the side, you will spot the diamond-cut alloy wheels. Generally, it has a silhouette that resembles that of the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-Tron GT.
For a first-time car, we can say that Xiaomi has really done its best to join with a bang. They have made the design as modern as possible, and it is looking great. But what powers this amazing car?
When we look at the battery pack side of things, the Xiaomi SU7 energy will all come with a 101 kWh CATL-supplied lithium-ion battery. With such a massive battery pack, we can expect the all-new SU7 to have a range of up to 800 kilometers, which is in line with the Chinese light-duty vehicle test cycle (CLTC). Aside from this, the company has stated that it has not only focused on range but has also emphasized rapid charging capabilities.
Xiaomi has assured everyone that the all-new SU7 will have the capability to gain up to 220 kilometers of range by charging it for only 5 minutes. And if you were to charge it for 15 minutes, then you would gain up to 510 kilometers worth of range.
The interior of the SU7 is also equally good-looking, and the company has even added a few touches of luxury there.
The Xiaomi Pilot ADAS will receive all its input from one lidar, three millimeter wave radars, 11 HD cameras, and 12 ultrasonic radars. This autonomous driving system will include highway driving, self-parking features, and car summoning. By the end of 2024, the company has said that they will have introduced city driving in more than 100 cities in China.
Before being one of the largest consumer electronic companies, Xiaomi was originally a software developer creating a modified Android ROM known as MIUI.
This new car from Xiaomi will be a game-changer.
