Cast and characters
▶ Emily Browning as Laura Moon, Shadow Moon's wife and a revenant.[3] Browning also portrays Essie MacGowan, the Irish woman whose belief in leprechauns changes the course of her life.
▶ Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney (seasons 1–2), a leprechaun in the employ of Mr. Wednesday; he has trouble coming to terms with losing his charm.

And, finally, we have Laura's rebirth. What the heck?

Her trip to Purgatory sure was eventful and prosperous. Even the Purgatory guide was shocked to see her zipped out of the place.

I don't know why it happened, but it seemed to be a combination of fresh air mixing Sweeney's blood with her ashes that did the trick. Since she refuses to admit that her murderer became so much more to her, it's a sweet situation, indeed.

And geez, gimme more of her recalling her time with Mad Sweeney. Pablo Schreiber was a bright light on American Gods, so getting snuffed out has done a little damage.

But if Laura can keep him with her and think of their time together with something other than disdain, then that's OK.

Did I mention she's alive? That's a pretty cool development and opens a brand new storyline for the characters. To top it off, she learned something from Purgatory, so she's bound to live a new life quite different from what defined her before she understood her life.

So, yeah, even though this hour was more fascinated with things like closeups on bubbles in a beer bottle, there was a lot to chew on as we wait for American Gods Season 3 Episode 5.

For the first two seasons of American Gods, the Leprechaun Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) was the Bogart to Laura Moon’s Hepburn (Emily Browning). Originally forced to stick together just because his lucky coin happened to be buried in her gut, a few sarcastic jokes and punches to the head later and somehow dirty glances became lingering looks. Laura is looking for him in Purgatory when all this hits her, midway through this episode, via a tearjerking montage of her departed beloved doing what he did best: staring moodily into the middle distance and smoking a fag.

Laura doesn’t know it yet, but it’s Sweeney’s love that’s going to yank her out of the great beyond and send her ricocheting back to not-so-great Earth. Cast your mind back to the fifth episode of last season, The Ways of the Dead, in which Sweeney took Laura to meet his old mate Baron Samedi (Mustafa Shakir). There in New Orleans, Samedi gave Laura a vial of gris gris with the instruction that it would bring her back to life if combined with: “Blood, infused with love… two drops.” Sure enough, when the vial breaks and the gris gris mixes with Laura’s dusty remains, all it takes is a couple of drops of Sweeney’s blood and – hey presto – Laura’s a real girl again. He really did love her – cute! However, as Laura soon learns, he’s also really dead. Where does that leave the reigning two-time queen of resurrection? Off to “see a man about a song,” she says. Her earworm is the classical tune that’s been haunting her memories. The AV Guy in Purgatory told her it was Schweiger’s ‘Requiem of Baldr’.
