Dietary modulation of the gut microbiome offers an attractive pathway to realize the promise of the microbiome to prevent disease. The integration of diet and microbiome data from humans has the potential to reveal previously undiscovered relationships between microbiota, foods, and food groups. When integrating dietary data into microbiome studies researchers face numerous decisions that ultimately impact the potential outcomes of their research. While there are many microbiome analysis methods, there is less information about how to operationalize diet to control for diet in microbiome studies. This talk will review the dietary pattern-microbiome literature, focusing on the methods used to effectively incorporate dietary complexity into analysis.
