10 Movies That Completely Changed From The Original Script

Jedi, Dinos, Con Air, oh my! A great man once said, “you can’t make a movie without a script.” I don’t know who that man was but he was correct. Despite this very real quote and tenet of filmmaking, from Star Wars to Spider-Man, many first drafts and even final drafts that make it to table reads are nearly unrecognizable to the final product. And after this list, I’m thinking that’s a mercy.

Sometimes those changes are unavoidable and heart breaking, in the case of cult classic film The Crow, or a long, drawn out process of dinosaur trial and error like Jurassic Park. And sometimes someone let James Cameron get way too close to a radioactive spider.

Those final quirks can uplift a film (and even a genre) too. Scream 2 without that gorgeous play as the finale backdrop? It without The Cure blasting as the gang help Bev clean up? Cut the heart right out of me. NO, NOT REALLY, PENNYWISE!

We narrowly escaped some real tragedies. Imagine no Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park. Imagine no Harrison Ford in Star Wars. And listen, chaos to the point of cannibalism? I’d expect it from Con Air and Nicolas Cage, but Judd Apatow… you?

But hey, these are strange times we’re living in, no doubt. I think it’s high time we finally see Will Ferrell eat his fellow man. Let’s Ron these Burgundys.
