Great cities are known for great public spaces too. But what does it mean to reclaim public spaces in a metropolis like Mumbai, where every sq ft comes at a premium? Assistant Commissioner Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Government of Maharashtra, Sharad Ughade takes us through the challenges of restoring open spaces and gardens in a bustling urban landscape, to allow it to breathe again.

Sharad Ughade, through his innovative style of work, is known for taking bold decisions to demolish illegal construction at major hotels in Bandra, Santacruz and Khar areas. He also initiated several environment preservation projects with public participation in the Mumbai suburbs. From the high-profile Pali Hills to slums in Kureshi Nagar with their mixed population and culture, Ughade has been successful in carrying out large scale public projects across Bandra. He is instrumental in bringing back many public spaces to life in Mumbai.
