Unboxing the Huawei P40, a compact flagship smartphone fresh for 2020, with a hands-on review of the specs, tri-lens camera, performance, battery tech and EMUI 10.1 software. Although this premium mobile lacks Google's apps and services, the Huawei P40's hardware is seriously enticing. And with a more affordable price than the Pro and Plus models, it's well worth a gander.

This is one of the only 'mini' handsets to emerge so far in 2020, proving a joy to handle. The FHD+ screen is crisp and colourful, although lacking the 90Hz refresh of those more premium siblings. Water resistance has also been slashed, while the 3800mAh battery is smaller and lacking fast and wireless charging.

However, you still get Huawei's nippy Kirin 990 platform with 5G support smushed into the P40, for premium PubG performance. I'm still seeing impressive battery life too, helped along by the efficient EMUI software.

As for the camera tech, that 50MP RYYB lens offers impressive autofocus creds. You've got a 3x optical zoom telephoto lens, which seems solid in my testing - while the ultra-wide shooter offers a different viewpoint. And the Huawei P40 boasts full 4K 60FPS video recording as well.
