With reported consumer price inflation reaching decade highs, and the prices of homes, cars, and other goods rising even faster, there is real reason to be concerned about the long term impact on your purchasing power. I share how I am positioning my portfolio to mitigate the impacts of inflation and even benefit from it.

By now you are likely familiar with the chart of the US Consumer Price Index which has shown the value of the dollar decrease by 92% from 1947 to 2021 today. This is a result of governments continuing to spend and print more money than they have, making each dollar worth less every year.

You can see that even for seemingly small rates of inflation, they add up over time to steal a meaningful portion of your real wealth over time.

If this frustrates you or gives you anxiety seeing this number go down, that’s good. It means you are aware and understand the long term impacts that inflation will have.

The next step is to position yourself and your assets and investments, in a way to mitigate or reduce the long term impact of inflation, and in some cases even benefit from it.

Hopefully my investing strategy can give you a starting point for thinking about how you want to build your own plan to handle inflation.
