In 1965 Colin Chapman, anticipating Coventry's withdrawal from Formula One, asked Ford to build him an engine. They declined, but after some convincing from Ford UK, they agreed to fund the project. The project produced the DFV, a cheap, off the shelf engine that could just be thrown into any car, or have a car built around it.

Into the 80s, even with the turbos, the engine was still being used, and the overall DNA of the engine continued into the 1990s as the last V8s started to be ditched in favour of V10s which had the perfect blend of power and fuel consumption.

So how good was this thing? Let's have a look.
