Since 2017, the RAV4 has sold more than the Camry, making it Toyota's best-selling car. It's also the usual choice in Toyota dealers' showrooms, but the company just recently released an alternative. The Corolla Cross is a great choice for people who value cost and gas mileage over the RAV4's extra space. The Honda HR-V, Subaru Crosstrek, and Chevrolet Trailblazer are all subcompact cars that compete with this one.

Given that most Toyotas go through a six- or seven-year product cycle, it makes sense that the Corolla Cross would get a midcycle facelift in 2025. In fact, Toyota has already released a model in Thailand that has been updated with new looks, a bigger tablet for entertainment, and digital gauges. Toyota hasn't said what changes will be made to the 2025 Corolla Cross for the U.S. market yet, but we expect there to be a lot of them.

Since it came out a few years ago, the Corolla Cross has shown itself to be a safe, useful, and convenient choice for people looking for a small SUV. Buyers will save a couple of grand compared to a similar RAV4 that is one size bigger, and our IntelliChoice friends say it's cheap to own compared to other cars in the same class. There is a lot of value here.

A year-long loan gave us plenty of time to get to know Toyota's smallest SUV and see what it could do well. It had a large trunk, good ground clearance, and no trouble on a light off-road trail even with front-wheel drive. We also like that Toyota includes standard driving assists on all trims. This little crossover even has nice turning feel, even though the back seat is pretty tight and the rest of the driving experience isn't great.

When going from a starter gear to continuously varying ratios, the gearbox tends to lurch a little at low speeds. The engine can also be noisy, stressed, and lack power. Driving on the highway can also be noisy. The ride is soft most of the time, which is bad for controlling your body but great on dirt or broken pavement. AWD models have a more advanced back suspension setup, which gives them a little more grip.

The Corolla Cross beat the Honda HR-V in a comparison test, even with those flaws; it's better for basic transportation. That's all you need sometimes.

According to IIHS, the Corolla Cross is a 2023 Top Safety Pick. The NHTSA gave it four stars for frontal crash protection and five stars for side crash protection. Toyota is also known for putting its Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 features on every Corolla Cross. These include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot tracking and adaptive cruise control are added to higher trims.
