From theory to practice and policies, our research group demonstrates how research ideas are manifested to solve real-world problems. Policymakers are keen with our work that impacts their decision-making process. The four research projects showcased include 3D mapping solution using Digital Twin technologies; “Blackbox” helmet wearable to improve workplace health & safety; robotic dog programmed to serve visually-challenged users; and new fire protection concepts to develop solutions in detecting and preventing potential fires.

Amongst these projects are award-winning solutions, recognised by both local and international public agencies and research parties for their advancement in innovative applications. For example, the Home Fire Alarm Detector project combines AI, sensors with big data to detect false fire alarms and other anomalies. It demonstrates a growing need of applied research towards practical solutions for everyday activities. This initiative has won the Ministry of Home Affairs Home Team Research Award 2019 and came in 1st in SCDF’s Lifesaver innovation challenge in 2019.

3D mapping (both indoor and outdoor) has been used in NTU’s Open House in 2017 – 2019 and MAE Open House in 2021. This project leverages high-resolution imaging, lidar imaging, 3D point clouds, robotics and other advanced image-taking tools, to reassemble pieces of information into a single, unified map. This research has been commercialised under NTU spin-off company - ECTech-IS in 2020.
