Heres what I did 
glued and clamped 2x4s
drew outline of what I wanted
used angle grinder with attachment
palm sanded with 40,60,80,120
measured for stripes
tape (using a laser and a pencil I made a guide line to follow)
stain ( I used an oil based stain)
seal (I used a waterbased sealer and finish)
print off union and grind it
2nd coat
3rd coat
rough-sawn maple boarder
4th coat
