This estate sale basket was everything I wanted in shape and form. Technically, I could have simply given it a quick wash, rinse and a day in the sun! However, the color didn’t work for me. As I have painted baskets before I knew I had a back-up plan if this attempt to stain failed. For a change my desire to always use what I have on hand first was a huge bonus. Originally, I was thinking a stain then a topcoat would be the only way to go. My concern with that method was there would be a lot of drippy run-off and because of the uneven surface a blotchy application as wiping the excess off would be pretty hard to do. As I happened to have the combo of stain and polyurethane, I was able to get a smoother more even application. Yes, I still had some splattering beyond the piece itself, (note: make sure you protect the area around the piece you are working on) but the slight thickness that the poly added to the stain helped it to stick to the piece. More importantly application did not require a wipe-off. In the end I have a basket in a hue I love.
