San Onofre State Beach was established in 1971 by Governor Ronald Reagan. The land was leased from the military for 50 years. It is a popular place for surfing, biking, camping and much more. The southern portion of the beach is protected by a high bluff. There are six trails from the parking leading down to the water. It is scenic beach that is mostly empty except for the big weekends like memorial and labor day.
