Back in February, leading physicist Leonard Susskind and his longtime collaborator, Adam Brown, came to X to dive into the physics of black holes and information.

It all started in 1981, when a young Stephen Hawking went up to the board at a private gathering of about 25 physicists and outlined his case for the loss of information as a black hole evaporates. Lenny Susskind and Gerard 't Hooft were transfixed, intrigued, and disturbed by a conjecture that would, if true, upend a core principle of quantum mechanics.

Over the course of the following decades, physicists debated Hawking's conjecture and the information paradox. However, recent work in the last few months may have resolved some key questions. Susskind and Brown discuss the narrative behind this important debate and share new revelations from the field.
