Though the concepts underlying the automobile date back several centuries, automobiles weren't really viable until the invention of the steam engine in the 1800s. The late 19th century also saw the invention of the first gasoline-powered automobile with an internal combustion engine. Following their original creation, the field saw a boom in invention, which quickly led to the tools we use on a daily basis today.
