Why Did North Macedonia Change Its Name?

In 2019, the Republic of Macedonia officially changed its name to the Republic of North Macedonia. The country would be called North Macedonia for short, and the national language would continue to be referred to as Macedonian. The citizens of the country would also continue to be called Macedonians, not North Macedonians.
So, why did North Macedonia change its name, if they were to be referred to as the same?
For that, we will have to go many, many years back in the past.
The Macedonian region is enormous, but this region has shifted its boundaries so frequently that it is almost confusing to keep track. The landlocked country in the heart of the Balkans is bordered by Kosovo and Serbia to the north, Bulgaria in the east, Greece in the south; and Albania in the west.
The country has the highest number of mountains and mountain peaks in the world, each with a height of more than 2000 meters above sea level. Home to around two million people, North Macedonia is one of the poorest countries in Europe with an average annual salary of $778. 17% of the population is unemployed. It can meet its basic food needs, but has to depend on outside sources for all its oil, gas, machinery and parts.
