Due to the healthcare demand arising from COVID-19, requests for funding for hospital spaces have been made in the Greater Seattle Area. An existing hospital has been selected for a structural addition to increase patient capacity. Seattle lies in the Cascadia Subduction Zone that has the potential of an 8.1 earthquake within the next 50 years. Our team has proposed an additional structure to an existing 10 story hospital building modeled through a scaled balsa wood structure and simulated through a numerical analysis software, SAP2000. Geotechnical/Seismicity, Structural, and Architectural aspects have been considered to produce a seismic resistant and sustainable building that serves the city through this crisis and beyond.
