In today’s podcast episode, Sabah wrote in to ask about seed cycling, which is the practice of eating specific seeds at certain points in your menstrual cycle to help promote the healthy balance of estrogen and progesterone to regulate cycles, increase fertility, and ease PMS symptoms.

Here’s what she has to say, “Hi Dr Aimee, does seed cycling actually work ? My cycles are currently 40 days with no known fertility issues just yet. Could seed cycling help with bringing my cycles back to 32 to 35 days as they were last year?”

For this question, I’d make sure we first look at why your cycles are so long - because, as you know I like to focus on diagnosis before treatment. If we jump right to seed cycling (which may help), we are not addressing the issue, we are jumping right to treatment.

Here are some things to consider:
Is this due to a thyroid disorder? Is this from high prolactin? Is this PCOS or decreased ovarian reserve?
I would recommend getting your levels checked: FSH, estradiol, LH, AMH.
If your AMH is high, do a PCOS workup.
If the AMH is low, do a decreased ovarian reserve work-up. Also, be sure to check your preconception labs (including vitamin D, thyroid and prolactin).
