It's time for some honest talk about student loans. Based on the research I did for the documentary Broke, Busted & Disgusted (http://www.brokebusteddisgusted.com), the sheer weight of student loans is so oppressive for so many, it requires an understanding of how SLs work and how to payoff quickly.

The biggest hurdle to clear right away is the belief that you can actually pay off your loans faster than your current payment schedule would allow. Trust me, it's possible. And to make it happen even faster, it's imperative that you understand how the loans work, how interest is charged, how your payments are applied, and what might be necessary to get these suckers paid off quickly!

This video touches on what you need to know as it relates to your payment, the amount of interest paid, and how payments are applied. To put it simply, the student loan servicing companies are generally setting up payments to keep you in debt for as long as possible. Granted, they're doing it so that you can actually afford the payments required, however, they have very little motivation to help you get your loans paid off quickly.

Again, one of the best things you can do is DECIDE that you're going to pay them off. Then, get really aggressive about making payments towards the lowest balance or highest interest loans and get them knocked out. Pay close attention to where those payments go and make sure your money is being used effectively!
