Video tutorial on how to clean and lubricate the sunroof mechanical on your vehicle. With most of the sunroof mechanism having direct contact with the outside environment when it’s open, it can easily come in contact with dirt or any other foreign contaminants. The contaminated lubricant or even if it just dries out can cause slow or hard sunroof operation. It may not operate correctly or cause premature failures on certain components. If it starts closing and then suddenly switches it’s direction as if someone was caught in the opening, this could be a lack of lubrication. They should be checked each year. #deoxit #volvo #autocare

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-clean rags
-degreaser
-grease
-lubricating oil
-paper towel
-brush
-vacuum cleaner

Procedure:
First you’ll need to start by opening the sunroof to gain access to the track. Typically I prefer to start with vacuuming up any loose debris before wiping away any old lubricant. This should not only be done on the tracks, but around the sunroof frame too. The whole sunroof cavity should be cleaned, otherwise the new grease can be contaminants from existing dirt.

I use paper towel for this and even a light about of degrease can be applied to the paper towel too. Here I’m using a cleaner from Caig Laboratories Val-U series which can be used on electronic and mechanical components, the model number is DDW-V611. This product evaporates fast and will help clean the surface of any grease, oil, and dirt. I would recommend spraying it on the surface as you may get the headliner dirty. Paper towel can sometimes leave some fibres behind or ripped up from sharp edges, use a vacuum to remove debris left behind from the paper towel.

When the grease is removed, it’s also important to go outside of the mechanism, around the cavity to clean up any dirt or debris. As mentioned earlier, existing dirt can contaminate new lubricant. Use a wet cloth to clean the frame of the sunroof. Cleaning these areas also helps reduce the chance of any debris falling inside of the drains causing a clog.

Next is applying a light layer of grease to the mechanism, this can be done by hand. You only need to smear a light layer on the sliding components. For this I am using DeoxIT’s L260D grease which can be used on electrical and mechanical applications. This is infused with their D100L which helps dissolve and prevent corrosion on metal or alloy surfaces while providing a strong bond.

You may need to operate your sunroof a couple times for the grease to fully move around the tracks. Reinspect the tracks and apply more lubricant if needed. Don’t apply too much where it can run onto other areas.

Areas which need lubricant can vary depending on sunroof designs. You’ll typically want to make note of where the old grease was, then reapply it in those areas or inspect the frames for rub marks and apply the grease on those areas.

Putting the sunroof in the tilt position, this will help gain access to any pivot points. Some small covers may require to be pulled back in order to gain full access. The rubber accordion here can be pulled back and it only snaps into place. Wipe away any old lubricant using paper towel.

Apply a light layer of grease by hand. While I can’t get access to pivot pins here, these can be hard to lubricate with grease so instead I’d recommend using DeoxIT’s X10S Precision Lubricant which can be used on metals, rubbers, and plastics. Once done snap the accordion piece back into place. Then do the same for the opposite side.

With to the new lubrication, the sunroof will operate much more smoothly and it may change it’s movements. If you are finding any movement issues, most vehicles can have their sunroof’s recalibrated and this is typically done with the key on, the sunroof may need to be in a certain position and the button is required to be held for a certain amount of time. Procedures will vary between manufacturers.
