J.P. Plachecki, a native of Winona, excelled at Cotter High School as the best actor in 1978 and a three-year varsity football defensive captain, contributing to six consecutive shutouts. He earned a BA cum laude from St. Mary's University of Minnesota, a JD from Hamline University Law School (dean's list), and an LLM from Boston University School of Law. Plachecki served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue before returning to Winona in 1994 to join the Darby, Delano & Price law firm. He specializes in representing accused individuals in criminal cases across the Midwest.

His accomplishments include a landmark win in the Minnesota Supreme Court case State v. Burbach, where he argued before the court. Plachecki's achievements span Minnesota Superlawyer recognition from 2005 to 2023, being named a top 40 criminal defense attorney by Minnesota Law & Politics in 2007 and 2008, and a feature in "The Winona Boys" in the April/May 2008 issue. He co-counseled with George Parnham, known for his work with Andrea Yates, and partnered with prominent criminal defense attorney Douglas Walser Thomson for a decade. Plachecki also served as adjunct faculty at Winona State University.
