AK Industries, Inc. designed this storm shelter with two purposes in mind: providing affordable protection from violent storms and producing very strong storm shelters in a more cost-effective solution than conventionally installed shelters. This storm shelter design functions as a mold for concrete filling between the ¼" (0.25-0.33 inch) inner and outer walls that act as a mold form for the concrete fill. The strength of the shelter comes from engineered ribbing and from internal structural cores, which reinforce the inner and outer walls. It is also built strong enough to be buried without concrete filling in between walls. Concrete is only necessary for the lid piece due to traffic load ratings. This provides installers the two options that are both safe and reliable. The shelter provides 158 cubic feet of total internal space with seating for up to twelve people with standing room as well.
