In this video, I tried to answer the burning question of whether someone can be happy in their corporate job. The harsh reality of corporate career according to me is that happiness is often compromised for results. The reality of corporate job should be understood by all the youngsters who are getting into the corporate world with big dreams and high hopes. It is not to make you question your decision but to help you approach a corporate career with realistic expectations.

The first reason why we are unhappy in our corporate jobs is that we are living in India which is considered to be the back office of the world. What does this mean? This means that most of the strategic decisions will be made in countries like the USA, the UK, and so on. But in India, only the maintenance work will take place. We cannot blame the IT services companies for it because they at least brought us some jobs. If you are working in the IT services companies like TCS, Wipro, and Infosys then you would know this dark reality of IT services that you don’t get to work on developmental projects often.

Such maintenance work in IT or even in Investment Banking is not going to be highly satisfying for you because you will only be doing the back office job from their India office. Because of this even if you are paid well, it is very difficult for you to be happy at work. The second reason is that corporations prefer efficiency. This means that you will be doing the same thing for a very long time so that you can get more work done in a shorter duration. So, you can get better at work and corporates can pass down more work to you from then onwards.

What happens to employees in this process? We will be bored by doing the same work over and over again. The next problem is that our managers. I believe all human beings are good at the end of the day but all managers are bad. This is because managers are striving towards better results and work life balance comes secondary in that pursuit. This corporate job reality is a real bottleneck when it comes to killing job satisfaction and job happiness.

Most people when exposed to this harsh corporate reality look for avenues out of their job to make themselves happy. I did the same thing. I tried to teach school kids in my free time and it gave me a lot of happiness.

The next thing is to find a company where work-life balance is valued. It is difficult to find such a company in India so it would be better to move abroad. Still, one of the best ways to make a lot of money in India is to move abroad, work there for some time, and then come back to India. The only reason is that you are earning in dollars and spending in rupees. The next thing is to pick up job areas that are in demand. You can also go for entrepreneurial opportunities and own a small profitable startup.

Corporate life in India might be really difficult but you can use these solutions to make it slightly easier for yourself. Hope you find this video valuable, see you in the next one.
