This talk will be a more mathematical sequel to Maria's previous talk: Compartmental Models in Epidemiology. You can listen to the talk now on    • Compartmental Models in Epidemiology ...   !

This talk will be broad; we will look at many interesting techniques in mathematics that are used to model the spread of infectious diseases, but we won’t go into the fiddly details. We will explore more into the ‘modelling’ aspect. Furthermore due to requests from last talk, we will touch a bit on parameter estimation as well.

The maths (beyond the standard systems of coupled ODEs) that we will use include:
- Discrete-time models
- Partial differential equations
- Integro-differential equations
- Resonances, bifurcation diagrams and chaos!
- Branching processes
- Stochastic differential equations
- Reaction-diffusion equations

We will also run some simulations on networks and lattices! With these tools, we will explore topics in epidemiology such as stochastic dynamics and spatial models. We hope this talk will be of great interest to the applied mathematician inside each of us!

This talk will be strictly not about COVID-19.

This talk will assume basic knowledge of epidemic models within the SIR paradigm. The first half of Maria's previous talk (   • Compartmental Models in Epidemiology ...  ) will be sufficient.

If you wish, any feedback to the speaker through https://forms.gle/fPb5wCBLgCuEAL8UA will be highly appreciated! You might also want to check out the resources page for the talk on https://www.mariaalegriagutierrez.wor... !
