Discussion Questions:
1. What do you make of the abrupt transition of topics from verse 11 to 12, and then back to suffering in verse 13?
2. Why does James say that this matter of integrity in our words is “above all”? How is integrity and Christian character linked?
3. We spoke about human nature being sinful in all human history since the fall. Do you agree with this, or do you see our culture as being far worse relative to other cultures in history?
4. Children often lie in obvious ways, but Pastor Andrew pointed out that we do the same thing, we are just better at it. Is this true? If so, how do we do the same things, and how can we change that?
5. What is the state of integrity and honesty in modern western civilization? Is there a devaluation of integrity, as Kent Hughes suggests? If so, why, and how does that impact believers?
6. Believers sometimes put on a show at church so that members of this church family think better of them. How is this detrimental to them, and to everyone else around them?
7. What does it mean to be fully known and fully loved?
8. Orthodoxy should lead to Orthopraxy. What does this mean? Discuss the danger of erring on the extreme on either side (only focusing on orthodoxy or only focusing on orthopraxy).
9. What are two takeaways from the book of James that you will remember and practice moving forward?
