In this episode, I'll show you how to drop the engine and transmission out of an aircooled 911 using basic tools, without a lift! I tried to walk through every notable step of engine removal, let me know if I missed anything!

*NOTE REGARDING THE CLUTCH ARM: Most instructions say you need to remove the large clutch arm, and it should drop off that shaft after removing the circlip and smaller clutch arm. Well, mine would not move. I am not sure how many hours I wasted on this. I tried torching it, hammering it, prying it, and then I discovered that there is a retention pin holding it onto the shaft. So I tried pounding that out, no dice. It just isn't moving and difficult to access. I tried using an air chisel, still no dice. Turns out.... just leave it on there. You can flip it towards the front of the car, the over center spring will snap it forward, which disengages the clutch. If you don't do this, the engine and trans will be difficult to separate.

Join me as I stumble along rebuilding the drivetrain of my 77 Porsche 911S. To be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing. I've never owned an aircooled car before this one, there's a huge learning curve, and I've been avoiding this since I bought the car years ago. I can't afford to pay 911 prices on things, so I'll be doing as much of the work myself as possible.

Although the car ran and drove okay, the amount of leaking, smoking, and general neglect of the drivetrain finally needs to be addressed.

I'm just a hobbyist mechanic, and I've never torn into an aircooled car before, so I'm really clueless on most of this stuff. Would appreciate any support or tips; if you see me doing something incorrectly, let me know! I apologize for some of the production quality in this video, it's very difficult to get decent lighting/footage while working under a car with only about 12" of space.
