Insomnia is something we all get from time to time.

It’s often caused by stress or changes in our situation.

And it has a knock-on effect the following day because instead of waking up refreshed, you’ve barely nodded off at all.

There are various natural remedies you can take – they’re nature’s equivalent of a sleeping pill but without being manufactured so there are (hopefully) few or no side effects.

The one that gets mentioned regularly is melatonin – because our bodies naturally produce this chemical as bed time gets closer. But some countries – including the UK – treat it as a medicine so you can’t buy it over the counter.

Far better, in my view, to encourage our body to produce its own supply of melatonin and help get over the insomnia.

Start by putting your phone down. Even if it’s got a night time setting there’s still a glow from it that can potentially disrupt your sleep. And if you’re suffering from insomnia you don’t want to do anything that would make it worse. So set a time that you’re going to stop looking at your phone or any other screen to give your brain chance to get sleepier.

Next, make sure the room you sleep in is as dark as possible. Use blackout curtains if you can and make sure your curtains are closed as tightly as possible to reduce the amount of light coming in. If the moon is out (or due out) this is really essential.

Also cover up any other source of light – standby lights on electronics for instance. I hide my alarm clock under a t-shirt to stop its light showing up.

Make sure your bedroom is a reasonably consistent temperature – that could mean swapping your duvet for one with a different Tog rating, opening or closing windows (so long as there’s not too much noise coming in) and adjusting what you wear in bed.

A consistent bed time routine is also worth having if at all possible. Our bodies are creatures of habit and get used to the idea of going to bed at a certain time.

Playing yourself relaxation music can help you to drift off to sleep naturally.

Or – even better to my mind – is playing yourself a hypnosis track like the ones linked below this video.

Hypnosis is relaxing anyway and that, combined with all sorts of conscious and subconscious instructions to fall asleep is the perfect combination.

The pack of tracks I’ve linked to includes various MP3s that are all specifically designed to help with your insomnia and there’s also one that is good to have available that will help you get back to sleep. That’s especially useful in the early stages of curing your insomnia as well as when something disturbs your sleep in the middle of the night.

Check out the link below and you’ll be curing your insomnia naturally before you know it.
