2024 Mercedes-AMG G63 Review: Boxy Brilliance Charges On

The Mercedes-AMG G63 is an automotive unicorn – a wildly impractical and excessive vehicle that amazingly continues to exist in an increasingly eco-conscious world. For 2024, the G63 carries on with its audacious formula, blending military-bred off-road capability with a twin-turbo V8 producing 577 horsepower. It's utterly absurd, and we love it.

Under the G63's squared-off hood lies AMG's fantastic 4.0-liter biturbo V8, sending 627 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Despite tipping the scales at nearly 6,000 pounds, the G63 will sprint to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. That's supercar territory, yet this box on wheels can also conquer tough off-road trails like a mountain goat.

The G63's on-road demeanor can't totally escape its humble roots, however. The suspension has been tuned by AMG to be livable on paved roads, but there's an underlying stiffness that reminds you this vehicle's frame is derived from Unimog truck bones. Body motions are well-controlled, but smaller impacts reverberate through the cabin more than you'd expect for a $184,150 starting price.

Inside, the G63's square-jawed styling dominates, with an upright dashboard and plentiful passenger space. High-quality materials abound, from the standard leather upholstery to the available massaging multi-contour seats. The G's party piece remains its side-hinged rear door, which swings out to reveal a modest 38.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. Swing both rear seats forward and you're treated to 68.6 cubes.

While it's far more refined and luxurious than the bare-bones G-Wagens of yore, the 2024 G63 remains a delightfully irrational purchase in a sea of increasingly similar luxury SUV alternatives. AMG's insane off-road hot rod simply doesn't make a lot of sense – but that's entirely the point. Sometimes you just have to lust after the outrageous.
