A growing body of research is raising concerns about the short- and long-term health effects of microplastics, which are ubiquitous and easily flow through the food chain.

To address this challenge, URMC and Rochester Institute of Technology have established the Lake Ontario Center for Microplastics, a collaborative research hub funded by a $7.3 million National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and National Science Foundation grant. Led by Katrina Korfmacher, PhD, professor of Environmental Medicine, the center will investigate the lifecycle of microplastics in the Great Lakes, focusing on their movement through the food chain and potential health effects.

The research will also examine how climate change could intensify the environmental and health threats posed by microplastics.

What are microplastics? Why Rochester? Dr. Korfmacher provides insights.
