Maybe some customers better understand why there may be a price difference on a chain replacement, after watching this video.
This car was brought to a workshop from another "workshop" that had replaced the timing chain but still got fault code P0016 after "repair".
Here is the text from the hotline case in DDTSB with acceptance from the workshop who contacted us.
Workshop:
We have received the car as it is now and there has been a mechanic for 2 months working on this who have replaced the following:
packing set
top gasket
balance shaft
chain
packing sealant / crank
oil
belt for water pump
Waterpump
- we have got a car that goes really rough, can not really take the gas.
- Lots of noise from chain (Chain has been changed and timing fits according to mark on crankshaft / camshaft between knobs and towards midpoint cylinder head)
- Started with control timing as it makes so much noise we did not really dare have it started.
- P0016 comes after 1 min approx, as well as some p0300, also us on each individual p0301, p0302, p0303, p0304.
Compression measured 13,13,12,13 bar.
oil pressure has been measured
1 bar idle
2 bar at gas up to 3300 rpm approx
3.5 bar 3300-3500 and up.
when you give gas it sounds like it can neither get air nor get rid of it, I thought it sounds like a car with wrong timing as it rumbles a lot in intake by gas (Although timing is ok).

Hotline supporter:
Hi XXXXX. When measuring timing, the piston at cyl, 1 must be at the top. Please measure this and send me the pictures. Otherwise I would suggest that you do a PICO measurement and compare with a known good waveform.

Workshop:
When the crankshaft is marked according to the chain cover and the cams fit, then you can turn the engine 30-45 degrees before the piston 1 is at the top. If it is true that the piston must be at 12 o'clock / exactly 0 degrees then the timing is off.
Had not thought further about it except that the piston is up close to the top, yes. but not quite at the top.
Then he must have fitted the crankshaft pulley incorrectly.

Hotline:
It happens to many. If you search for P0016 under bulletins then you will find the bulletin on it TSB No. 4752. See page 5.
